The Candy Man and I were talking about music today (as we always do) and came to the conclusion that certain types of music (genres) are appropriate for certain training sessions.
For example, we like old school punk rock when we do our high rep kettlebell snatch workouts.
I know Marine Mike digs his old school hip hop for slower paced strength training.
There could be some show tune fans!
There are many Greatfull Dead fans in the house as well, but I’m not sure where they would fit into the mix (great for hanging out in the court yard with a few cold ones in the Summer). Maybe some good foam roller music.
I also here lots of talk from the ladies about getting some dance music on the ipod.
Any way, watch the video and drop a comment below.

Social D and AC/DC. I know there’s already plenty of these two in the mix, so keep it coming!
Thanks Marc. Those are TR staples.
AC/DC all the time on continuous loop. Slipknot on holidays and special occasions.
Any music is fine with me, I just don’t want to hear the F word.
Thank you!
Tommy J!!!!! HAAAA!!
Although I love to dance, dance music while I work out is no good. It distracts me and makes me want to dance. I say good old rock is best…Love that Candy Man!
@Jan I will take that into consideration when you are in class.
Thanks for the feedback!
I dig the dropkick murphys for intense heavy kettlebell stuff. Please no techno or anything like that. Also the F word bothers me when working out.
rage against the machine, bouncing souls, audioslave and maybe some 90′s alternative stuff for slow strength days?
No angry music please. One day a few weeks ago we heard the same growling, screaming song on repeat for the entire workout. I’m not into the explicit lyrics either.
Olivia Newton John — “lets get physical”
AC/DC, Social D have been effective..Old school punk rock is definitely nice.. But i wouldnt mind some high intensity dance music once in a while!
Has the Milkman been replaced with The Candyman?
I would actually like to see the Uncle Mike / Candyman show as a weekly feature
Maybe take some questions and have Jim Fowler on the show
Foo Fighters all day everyday!!
Punk, alternative, classical, metal…as long as it rocks!
I like when the milkman plays blink 182 and pearl jam!
AC/DC. Offspring, guns n roses, disturbed, rage against the machine , metalica and some blink n green day
Well, #1 at the TR for me, is always Social D, but I haven’t heard the new album in the big room yet…and AC/DC is kettlebell strength at it’s best. I like the Sirius tuned in to Garage and Boneyard as well, Lithium is good too. I’ve heard some 12 minute moe. jams lately that will take your mind off things. The TR music has always been good, just get a bigger iPod and put it all on there on shuffle! Just like the workout, you never know what you’ll get.
Dude…totally agree the Candyman needs to have a weekly feature where he can talk about whatever the hell he wants…the arts, politics, international relations, dancing with the stars. As far as music goes we are heavy on Rage against the machine, jay-z, dropkicks, Metallica, it’s gotta be upbeat and a little angry never hurt as you’re pushing the big bells! Here’s one to try out Uncle Mike:
21-15-9-6-3
Snatches w/s
Wall ball
Philips
Rocked a 24kg and finished in 10:58
Hey guys and gals, thanks for all the input. Like Laura said, looks like I’ll need a larger Ipod.
Keep the comments coming.
I’m totally down for a “Candy Man Speaks” day. I’ve been working on him to do this.
@Carol M, what was the name of the band you were telling me about?
Ac/dc is great to use eminim some great tunes to use good heavy beat to it
Some good stuff from black sabath blue oyster cult ELO the list is endless
But it’s always hard to please everyone.
Danzig, Metallica, Beastie Boys ( a la ILL Communication/Check Your Head), Black Sabbath, Ozzy, Pantera, etc.
Keep it LOUD!
Good music is just the icing on the TR cake. You will never please everyone, so keep it diverse, and savor the moments when it is right for you.
Oh and AC/DC works for me.
On those intense cardio days…..a little more of a dance beat would be great! I am with Yusef on that one
just need to switch it up a little bit. Don’t get me wrong, I like the rock music, but can get a little monotonous sometimes.
I’m one of those odd balls that actually prefers no music when working out. However, if you want some suggestions then I like some very angry music when working out. ( Tool, slipknot, Mudvayne… music of that nature)
Just put the ipod on shuffle and whatever you get you get…..if you live with a teenager you learn to tune out ANYTHING that you don’t like:)
Hey Mike,
Thanks for starting this.
I enjoy punk rock. In addition to that, here are some artists I listen to: Breaking Benjamin, Linkin Park, Metallica, Mudvayne, Eminem, Lady Gaga, 30 Seconds to Mars, etc. Just to name a few.
I’m with Grateful Bells, Paul, and Kathleen on the shuffle. Mixing it up is always good.
cardio-old school hardcore punk rock
(trying to keep it mostly clean)
Check out:
gorilla biscuits, minor threat and
maybe some e-town concrete (nj represent?)
old school hiphop:
tribe called quest, run dmc
dancy music:
daftpunk, blocparty, justice, black eyed peas
Nice Steph! Thanks for all the feedback. I will check out all of that!
Thanks Zina!
I agree with Natalie, foo fighters. Keeps ne relaxed and helps focus breathing, almost hypnotic.
It’s got to be dance music for me – Ke$ha, Usher, madonna, pink … or led zeppelin!
